Starting out a business which is closely related to our passion is indeed never mistaken. Ever since he was a young, Sun Wahyu has always dreamed to have a cake shop. Admitting to have passion in baking, back in 2010, Sun left his full-time job as a graphic designer in some notable design studios, and eventually focuses in his own business. After quite a long time since he quit from his job, started from his hobby to experiment in making cookies and cakes and supported by his ability to design as his background tells, Sun plunged into an online business with a focus on selling cakes and cookies he made by himself.
Set out with the name Surely / Someday + Kitchen which was inspired by his one of his favorite composers Yoko Kano, Sun tries to create a delightful choice of cookies and cakes for his customers who want to reminisce with cookies and cakes made by their mothers when they were just little. “Happiness comes from simple things. That is the concept of Surely / Someday + Kitchen (S/S+K). For me, not everything has to be fancy, sometimes even simple things could bring happiness to people. I remember when I was just a little boy, my Mom always picked me up at school and brought cookies and cakes she made. That’s what I want to highlight in S/S+K, bringing the moments back,” said Sun.
“I just like the meaning behind surely someday, because as a human we have no idea about what will happen next. But for sure, we need to hold on hope even when life is getting us down. After quitting a job, I was like searching what I want to be and what I want to do. With S/S+K I sure want to bring something simple to my customers without sacrificing the taste. Although the looks of S/S+K’s product are very simple, but we try to keep the essence of nostalgia in any cookies we made,” he recounted.
Sun said that the first concern is his family was not sure about what he does since he doesn’t have educational background in cooking. But his works, seriousness, and perseverance in carrying Surely / Someday + Kitchen slowly bearing fruit. He admitted that in managing S/S+K which has existed ever since in the middle of 2011, he got precious help from his friend and his mother, especially in fulfilling their customers’ order.
Personal Touch in the Products
Sun seems serious with the concept that he brings into Surely / Someday + Kitchen. Sun said that before he officially launched a product, he experimented a lot. After much trial and error, Sun then rolled out his product to the market. Sun admitted that some of the recipes of S/S+K’s products are originally come from her mother, but not the least of which are modified by himself.
With the typical nuance he brings into every product of cookie and pound cake products of S/S+K, Sun admitted to be inspired by many things happened on his daily basis. “Every product that I created does contain personal elements. As Earl Grey cookies, for example. Initially I tried to make Earl Grey Cookies because I and my best friend do enjoy drinking Earl Grey tea. I thought why not to bring it into the form of a cookie. I want a personal touch like that in any of my products. Like every product has a story behind its existence. I believe that product that has a story, or at least made by heart, are easier to be enjoyed, “said Sun.
“There are approximately 16 cookies and pound cakes of S/S+K at the moment. However, there were some cookies and pound cakes that come-and-go. Especially for pound cake, I like experimenting. So, there is seasonal item for pound cake,” said Sun. For the price, Sun (S/S+K) tags cookies IDR 22.500 per pack and IDR 115-155.000 for pound cakes.
Cookies like Earl Gray, Chai, Peach & Passion Fruit Tea Sable, Rosemary Honey, are costumers’ favorites of Surely / Someday + Kitchen. For pound cakes, S/S+K has six variant of pound cakes like Earl Gray, Green Tea & Red Bean, Chocolate Orange, Café au Lait, Strawberry Yogurt, Apricot with honey almond, and Raspberry with Pistachio and Cranberries. Besides cookies and pound cakes, S/S+K also offers Paste for ones who like something savory in addition to the sweet ones. As complementary for cookies and pound cakes, the customers can also order +Haabu, like Purple Rose Tea, Lavender Tea, Chamomile Tea, Cassia Tea, Lemongrass Tea, and Peppermint as a companion to eat cookies and pound cakes.
